Day 8 — Doubtful Sound → Queenstown

Sunday, March 29 · 172 km · ~2 hrs 15 min drive · Sunset 7:43 PM

Direct Manapouri → Queenstown via SH6. No Wanaka or Crown Range — you've done both and the 11:30 AM return gives just enough time for a clean drive in, lunch, a relaxed afternoon, and the full Gondola evening.

Notes

11:30 AM | Return to Pearl Harbour, Manapouri

Confirm exact return time with your operator the night before — overnight cruises can run 15–20 min either side of schedule. Car is parked at Pearl Harbour from Day 7.

11:45 AM | Drive Manapouri → Queenstown Direct (~2 hrs 15 min)

SH6 north via Te Anau and Kingston. Straightforward drive on good roads.

The Kingston area gives a last look at the southern tip of Lake Wakatipu before the final run north into Queenstown. No stops needed — you've seen this country well.

Route: Manapouri → Te Anau → Mossburn → Kingston → Queenstown via SH6

Fuel up at Te Anau if needed — it's ~25 min from Manapouri and the most convenient stop on the route.

2:00 PM | Arrive Queenstown — Check In Holiday Inn Express

69 Stanley Street. Drop bags, shower — you've been on a boat since yesterday noon. You have nearly 3 hrs before the Gondola.

Parking at the hotel: Confirm parking availability when booking. If hotel parking is full or not included: - Free all-day parking along Queenstown Gardens (flat walk to town) - Free all-day parking outside the YHA Lakefront on the Glenorchy road - Free 240-min parking near the gondola base on Brecon Street (arrive early)

2:30 PM | Lunch in Queenstown

Bespoke Kitchen or Vudu Café — both reliable vegetarian options, no booking needed on a Sunday afternoon. Sit outside by the lake if weather allows.

3:30 PM | Explore Queenstown Town Centre

Waterfront, Steamer Wharf, Queenstown Gardens. Gentle walk — no agenda. After a night on a boat in a fjord, just being in a lively town feels good.

5:00 PM | Gondola + Luge (Sunset 7:43 PM)

  • Take the gondola up from the base terminal on Brecon Street to Bob's Peak (450 m above town)
  • Gondola hours: 9:30 AM – 9:00 PM — last ride down is 9:00 PM
  • Luge hours: 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM — going up at 5:00 PM gives ~75 min of luge time before settling for sunset
  • Do the scenic track first to learn the layout, then advanced — well-earned fun after eight days of hiking and fiords
  • 5 luge runs: Each run + chairlift back up is ~10–12 min. 5 runs takes ~60 min, finishing around 6:15 PM — leaving 90 min at the viewing platform through golden hour and the full sunset at 7:43 PM

Booking online is recommended to skip the ticket queue — tickets are not time-specific, so book ahead and arrive when ready.

The light goes golden around 7:00 PM. Stay for the full sunset. This is the payoff view for the whole Queenstown stay.

8:30 PM | Dinner in Queenstown

Vudu Café & Larder or Bespoke Kitchen for something relaxed. Or Rata if you want a special meal — one of the best restaurants in town, excellent vegetarian options. Sunday night is quieter than Fridays and Saturdays so walk-ins are usually fine, but call ahead for Rata.

Return to hotel and rest.
