Day 15 — Fly Home

Sunday, April 5

Before This Day

  • [ ] Daylight Saving ended at 2:00 AM this morning — clocks went back 1 hour. You are now on NZST (UTC+12). Confirm all flight times are in the correct local timezone
  • [ ] Set multiple alarms — early start, no margin for a slow morning
  • [ ] Pack the night before. Do not leave anything for the morning
  • [ ] Check CHC → AKL flight status the night before — Air New Zealand flight status
  • [ ] Confirm rental car return bay at CHC with the hire company — ask for exact location and whether a shuttle runs from the return area to the terminal
  • [ ] Confirm AKL international check-in requirements — most transpacific routes require check-in at least 60 min before, but recommended 3 hrs for international
  • [ ] Confirm bag routing with Air NZ — ask whether bags will be tagged CHC → AKL → JFK on a single interline check-in, or whether you need to reclaim and recheck at Auckland international. If reclaim required, go to the bag drop counter before immigration rather than after, and add 20 min to the AKL transfer estimate
  • [ ] Clean hiking boots the night before and seal them in a bag inside checked luggage — 14 days of Fiordland, Arthur's Pass, and glacier trails will have left soil on them. NZ biosecurity on departure is serious about this; clean boots in sealed bags clear without issue, dirty boots can cause delays

Notes

6:30 AM | Morning

Pack was done the night before. Breakfast at the hotel if it opens early enough — otherwise grab something at Christchurch Airport. Most airport cafés open by 6:00 AM.

Optional — Christchurch Botanic Gardens (~30 min): The gardens are 10 min from most central hotels and open at dawn. A 30-min walk through in early April fall light is a genuinely beautiful send-off to the South Island. Only works if you're checked out and loaded by 7:15 AM rather than 7:30 AM — leaves the same buffer at the airport.

Daylight Saving note: Clocks went back at 2:00 AM this morning. New Zealand is now on NZST (UTC+12) rather than NZDT (UTC+13). Your phone will have updated automatically. Flight times on your booking confirmation are in local time and should be correct, but double-check if anything looks off.

7:45 AM | Drive to Christchurch Airport (~20–25 min)

Route: Christchurch CBD → CHC Airport via Memorial Avenue / SH1

  • Christchurch Airport is northwest of the city centre — ~20 min in light Sunday morning traffic
  • Return the rental car at CHC before checking in. Most car rental return areas at CHC are adjacent to the domestic terminal — confirm the exact drop-off bay with the hire company the evening before
  • Allow ~10–15 min for the car return: park, complete the return inspection, and take the short walk or shuttle to the terminal
  • There is usually a shuttle from the rental return area to the terminal (~5 min) — ask the rental company for the pickup point

8:25 AM | Christchurch Airport — Domestic Departure

  • Domestic check-in for a 10:20 AM flight closes around 9:30 AM — arriving at 8:25 AM gives a comfortable buffer
  • Bag drop closes 30 min before departure — cutoff for the 10:20 AM flight is 9:50 AM. Your 8:25 AM arrival gives plenty of margin, but worth knowing if the morning runs slow
  • Christchurch domestic terminal is compact — security and gate are a short walk from check-in
  • The domestic and international terminals at CHC are connected by a covered walkway but are boarded separately — no transfer needed for this leg since you're flying to Auckland to connect

10:20 AM | CHC → AKL (1 hr 25 min)

Christchurch to Auckland is a short domestic hop. Arrive Auckland ~11:45 AM NZST.

  • Sit on the right side of the aircraft heading north for views of the Canterbury Plains, Banks Peninsula, and eventually Kaikōura and Marlborough Sounds
  • The flight crosses the Cook Strait (the channel between the South and North Islands) — visible below on a clear day

11:45 AM | Arrive Auckland — Transfer to International

Auckland Airport has separate domestic and international terminals connected by a free shuttle or a 10-minute signposted walk.

The connection is comfortable. CHC → AKL lands 11:45 AM; JFK departs 4:30 PM — 4 hrs 45 min total. The inter-terminal transfer takes 20–30 min including the shuttle. Customs and immigration typically 20–40 min. Realistically you're in the international departures lounge by 1:00–1:15 PM with 3+ hrs to spare before boarding.

Transfer process: 1. Collect any checked bags from the domestic baggage carousel 2. Exit the domestic terminal and follow signs to the international terminal — the free inter-terminal shuttle departs from the ground floor every few minutes 3. Allow 20–30 min for the transfer and re-check of bags at international 4. International check-in desks open several hours before departure — you should be able to check in from ~12:00 PM onward for a 4:30 PM flight

Important: Confirm bag routing with Air NZ before the trip (see Before This Day). If bags are not tagged through to JFK, collect from domestic baggage and recheck at the international bag drop counter before going through immigration.

12:00 PM | International Check-in and Customs

  • Check-in and bag drop at the international terminal — allow 20–30 min including any queue
  • New Zealand customs and biosecurity — declare any food, plant material, or soil on the departure card. Penalties for undeclared items are substantial. Common items to declare: honey, wooden carvings, hiking boots with soil, any food from the South Island markets
  • Immigration (departure) — New Zealand uses SmartGate automated processing for eligible passport holders; typically fast
  • Once airside, head to the Air New Zealand Lounge — you have ~3 hrs before boarding

1:00 PM | Air New Zealand Lounge

The Air New Zealand International Lounge is airside in the international departures terminal at Auckland Airport.

  • Food and drink — full buffet food, hot dishes, barista coffee, and a full bar. No need to buy anything in the terminal
  • Showers — available in the lounge if you want to freshen up before the long flight
  • Seating — comfortable seating with power outlets; much better than the main departures hall for a ~3 hr wait
  • Wi-Fi — fast, reliable lounge Wi-Fi
  • The lounge is well-signed from the main security exit — follow signs for Air New Zealand Lounge in the international pier

4:30 PM | Board — Auckland International Departures

Last things to do in New Zealand before heading to the gate: - Currency — spend or exchange any remaining NZD. Remaining coins cannot be exchanged - GST refund — New Zealand has a Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS). If you purchased goods over $NZD 700 from a single store, you may be eligible to claim the 15% GST back at the airport. Requires receipts and the goods in carry-on - The Whitcoulls bookshop airside usually has a good selection of NZ photography books if you want something for the flight

4:30 PM | AKL → JFK (~17.5 hrs)

Auckland to New York is one of the longest commercial routes in the world — roughly 14,000 km, ~17–18 hours depending on winds and routing.

Flight details: - Crosses the South Pacific east toward Tahiti, then northeast over the ocean before making landfall on the US west coast and continuing to New York - Time zones cross the International Date Line during the flight — you effectively skip a calendar day going east. Departing Sunday April 5 Auckland time, you arrive Monday April 6 New York time (despite the flight taking ~17 hrs, the time difference means you "gain" time going east) - New York arrival time: approximately 7:00–9:00 AM Monday, April 6 (depending on winds and specific routing)

On the flight: - Auckland to New York crosses 17+ time zones — jet lag going eastbound is typically harder than westbound. Try to sleep on the plane aligned with New York nighttime hours rather than Auckland time - Hydrate more than usual — transpacific cabin air is extremely dry on long sectors

Return: New York Arrival

JFK Immigration: - US citizens/permanent residents: automated passport control kiosks (APC), typically fast - Complete the CBP declaration form on the plane or via the VisaWaiver/ESTA app before landing - Allow 45–90 min for immigration and customs at JFK depending on the queue

Luggage: Collect bags after immigration at the JFK baggage claim, then clear customs before exiting.

Into the city: JFK → Manhattan options: - AirTrain + Subway (~1 hr, ~$10) — AirTrain to Jamaica or Howard Beach, then subway - LIRR (~35 min to Penn Station, ~$15–25) — fastest rail option, AirTrain to Jamaica then LIRR - Taxi / rideshare (~45 min–1.5 hrs depending on traffic, ~$70–100 flat rate for yellow cab)
